So you’ve decided that you want to pop the question and now it’s time to start shopping. Guys, I know, the whole process of purchasing an engagement ring is completely overwhelming. First of all mentally prepare yourself. It’s not going to be like a trip to the hardware store, but remember you are doing this for her. The woman of your dreams!
Once you’ve gotten in the proper mental state, here is some advice to ensure that your engagement goes smoothly:
SET A BUDGET
Even if you don’t see the value in diamonds, believe us, she does. And, she wants one! Before you even step foot in a jewelry store, first set your budget. This will help you narrow down the selection and make the shopping experience a bit easier.
KNOW YOUR STUFF
No two diamonds are alike. Go into the process with a basic understanding of the 4 C’s so that you know what you’re looking for. Here are a few hints …
- Cut: While it can be confusing, the cut does not refer to the shape of a diamond, rather it’s unique proportions and it’s ability to reflect light. Cut is often considered the most important quality of a diamond.
- Color: While some white diamonds are considered “colorless”, almost every stone has a slight hint of yellow. The color of a diamond measures the presence of this yellow tint. Diamonds that are more saturated are less rare and less valuable.
- Clarity: Like human beings all diamonds contain some imperfections, or “birthmarks”. Clarity measures the size, amount and position of these imperfections. Each of these factors will impact the brilliance of a diamond.
- Carat Weight: Diamonds are sold by the carat, which is a weight equal to 0.2 grams. One thing to remember is that when it comes to diamonds bigger is not always better. Two diamonds of equal weight can have drastically different values based on their Cut, Color and Clarity.

GETTING THE RIGHT SIZE
If you’re looking to surprise her you’re going to have to be sneaky about determining her ring size. While she is away snag one of her rings from her jewelry box and bring it to your local jeweler to have it sized. If you’re nervous about her noticing that it’s gone place the ring on a piece of paper and trace the inside of the ring with a pencil. The jeweler will be able to work with that!
UNDERSTAND HER STYLE
Start by looking at her hands. While she may not have any diamonds (yet) notice what kind of rings she is wearing. What metals are they made of, white size are they and what shape are the stones? That will give you some indication of her style.
Another great place to check is Pinterest to see if your future bride has any boards made up. And if you’re not up to speed, Pinterest is a magical place where women leave lots of clues as to what they like, love, and want! If those options fail you, phone her friend.
NAIL THE PROPOSAL
Deep breathes, now it’s time to propose. Pick a setting that is personal to both of you whether it’s where you had your first date, her favorite restaurant or a private, outdoor setting. After you’ve chosen the spot, be sure to jot down a few words to keep you on track. Remember to have something to say after she says, “yes”, because she will. Finally, guys, one word of caution … don’t put the ring in her food. I wouldn’t want to hear that your perfect proposal ended with the Heimlich maneuver.
